Tennis Racket Buying Guide

Before going to the selection factors of a tennis racket, let’s have a quick recap on the different parts of a tennis racket.

Parts of a tennis racket

The selection of a racket depends on the following factors:

1. Head Size

Higher Head Size = More Sweet Spot (More hitting area)

  • Oversize: 105 sq. in. and above = For beginners
  • Mid plus: 98 – 104 sq. in. = For intermediate players
  • Midsize: 85 – 97 sq. in. = For advanced players

2. Weight

  • Lightweight (225  – 280 grams) = For beginners
  • Medium weight (280 – 300 grams) = For intermediate players
  • Heavyweight (300 – 325 grams) = For advanced players

3. Balance

The balance of a tennis racket refers to the weight distribution along the length of the racket.

  • Head Heavy = More mass towards the head (For less experienced players)
  • Head Light = More mass towards the handle (For professionals)
  • Even Balance = Equal weight distribution (For allrounders)

4. Length

The standard length of an adult racket is 27-29 inches. For juniors shorter rackets from 21 inches are available.

5. Stiffness

  • High Stiffness: 68 and above
  • Medium Stiffness: 64 to 67
  • Flexible: 63 and below

6. Beam Width

  • 25 mm – 28 mm = Power racket
  • 18 mm – 21 mm = Control racket

7. Stringing Pattern

  • 16 x 19 = Open string (More spin)
  • 16 = number of main strings, 19 = number of cross strings
  • 18 x 20 = Dense string (More control)

8. Grip Size

Grip size refers to the perimeter of a racket handle. A proper grip gives you the comfort of holding a tennis racket. 4 3/8″ is the most common grip size where the perimeter of the handle is 109 – 111 mm. To know more about grip size, check my article, “How to Select a Tennis Racket & Grip Size”.

Best Tennis Racket Brands

There are several manufacturers of tennis rackets in the world, and out of them, Yonex, Head, Babolat, and Wilson are the most popular brands in India.

Yonex, a Japanese brand, mainly known for badminton, opened the door for tennis in the year, 1969. Yonex is famous for its trademark isometric head. The most popular lines of Yonex tennis rackets are Ezone, VCore, VCore Pro, Astrel, and Junior. Several top 100 players like Stan Wawrinka, Denis Shapovalov, and Nick Kyrgios are using Yonex rackets.

Babolat, earlier famous as the manufacturer of racket strings, came into the field of tennis equipment in 1994. The main series of Babolat rackets that have a wide range of popularity are Pure Drive, Pure Aero, and Pure Strike. Top players like Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are currently using this company’s rackets. Babolat rackets are preferred by clay-court specialists who love topspin play.

Head, an American-Dutch company, started the production of tennis rackets in 1950. Under the three categories, Tour, Recreational, and Juniors, the mainstream rackets are Speed, Instinct, Extreme, Drive, and Radical. Some of the top players representing Head rackets are Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Mateo Berrettini, Andy Murray, and Maria Sharapova.

And finally, Wilson, the unnamed number-one brand for tennis rackets. This Chicago-based company started manufacturing sports goods from the year, 1913. Since then, this company gifted this world with a wide range of quality tennis equipment. The front runners of the Wilson series are Blade, Clash, and Pro staff. A majority of renowned tennis players like Roger Federer, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Juan Martin del Potro, Serena, and Venus Williams use Wilson rackets.
